Stylish cyclist airbag helmets called the Hövding made by industrial designers Anna Hauptmann and Terese Alstin.  Check after the break for a video of the airbag bursting in action.

“We wanted to develop a protection for cyclists that take account of the requests we got in our investigations. The protection would include preserving the sense of freedom and not ruin your hairstyle, says Terese Alstin which is one of the inventors.”

“The actual collar is the visible part of the invention. The shell of the collar is removable and available in many different styles and fabrics and will be launched in new collections. Hövding is a practical, handy accessory that is easy to carry, is stylish and unobtrusive in its design, while it saves your life, says Anna Haupt.”

Lego Interlocking Ring Giveaway

October 20, 2010 |  by  |  Geek, More, regular  |  No Comments  |  Share

——————————-CLOSED——————————-

Congratulations Autumn Drey You Won the Giveaway!!

These interlocking rings are handcrafted by Shannon Conrad, AKA Rubygirl, from her home studio.  Rubygirl is heavily concerned with protecting the environment. As a result, she is careful in the choices she makes in regards to the sourcing of her materials, as well as the processes she uses to make her jewelry line.  All of the sheet and wire she uses in her work is composed of 100% recycled silver.  She also uses non-toxic, environmentally friendly alternatives in her studio.

The interlocking rings were hand-cast by a process called “sand casting”.  This unique method requires a brand new mold for each piece. Because a new mold is reformed for each of the pieces, there are subtle differences in each of the rings, and so all the rings are literally one of a kind!

Be sure to check out Shannon Conrad’s Etsy Shop.

States of Dress

States of Dress

States of Dress is an art project by artist Robin Barcus.  She is in the process of creating a site-specific dress sculpture in each of the fifty states in the USA.  Follow her blog to get updates on the progress of this awesome project.

(Above: New York – Garbage Dress)

Barcus says,

When thinking about what to create for the New York edition of the States of Dress project, I didn’t hesitate a moment to imagine garbage. The first time I ever visited New York was during a massive garbage strike, and I have never seen mountains of garbage piled so high on busy city sidewalks. I was raised in Chicago, where we have alleys to hide our garbage. I was surprised to discover that New York is a city without alleys, resulting in every home and business -even the fanciest restaurants- leaving their piles of trash right outside their front doors on the sidewalk. Even when there is not a garbage strike, the garbage bags lining the sidewalks in New York take some getting used to.  However, by no means did I want to create something “ugly” for this metropolis of art, beauty and fashion. I therefore strived to create a “couture”, jet-black, fashionable New York dress, that just happened to be made from garbage bags. To me, this piece represents all the contrasts inherent to New York: wealth and poverty – beauty and trash.

Nevada – Casino Chip Dress

Iowa – Prairie Dress

Minnesota – Corn Dress

Illinois – Red Dress

Wisconsin – White Pine Dress

Maine – Pinecone Dress

Wyoming – Willow Dress

Food Packaging Fashion

Food Packaging Fashion by artist, environmental and human rights activist, Katell Gélébart.

Gélébart says,

I create exclusively with used and discarded materials such as inner tubes, blankets or towels.  Lately, I have focussed my attention on food packaging which is ubiquitous and contains great potential for re-use.  This particular packaging has a wonderful aesthetic quality in its graphics, color and display of language through text.  Its delicateness however, has meant the works that were previously robust must have become light and metaphors for a world of re-use.(…) they hint at a world after waste.
