Studio Gang Builds Cutting Edge Media Production Center

July 6, 2010 |  by taylor  |  Architecture  |  2 Comments

Chicago’s Studio Gang Architects have completed their latest project, Columbia College’s Media Production Center. The 3,600 sq. ft. space is unique in that it’s transparent glass infrastructure allows students to view wardrobe, set construction, and prop staging areas from the outside. The school boasts three sound stages, the largest one having the capacity to shoot and teach simultaneously. The department’s Chairman wanted to “instigate a pedagogical shift for students and instructors.” Though the building has come under much criticism for it’s lack of privacy, Columbia strives to do just that: Make behind-the-scenes work visible, increasing the effectiveness of student learning. (Studio Gang also designed Chicago’s Aqua building) More

This house was designed using concepts derived from the works of Spanish surrealist, Salvador Dali. Architectural firm 123DV used Jugendstil form to make the interior lines flow and took influences from ancient Spanish architecture for the facade, as requested by the client. The result is a trippy modern home with cool remnants from the past.

UK’s ‘Seed Cathedral’ for 2010 World Expo

May 4, 2010 |  by taylor  |  Architecture  |  No Comments

The Seed Cathedral sits in the centre of the UK Pavilion’s site, 20 metres in height, formed from 60,000 slender transparent fibre optic rods, each 7.5 metres long and each encasing one or more seeds at its tip. During the day, they draw daylight inwards to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources inside each rod allow the whole structure to glow. As the wind moves past, the building and its optic “hairs” gently move to create a dynamic effect.
